We were told this place was the "Italian chipotle". Perfect description and very tasty! I was surprised at the idea of a fast food Italian being high quality and fresh. This place prices it is possible. I had a half sausage pasta dish, which was more than enough after a week of binge eating. My husband had a sausage sandwich that he felt was more expensive than it was worth, next time he'll add more toppings. We don't eat a lot of pasta, but will keep this place in mind when we're near Eddy street. Definitely a top choice for the area.

I decided to check this place out while in town for a reunion. I was told it was the "Italian Chipotle." I was so excited to try this place, but the unwelcoming staff totally ruined my experience. I can't remember what the guys name was who waited on my sister and I, but he was really, really rude. It would have been nice to know that certain toppings were cold or different prices. Being total noobs to this restaurant, we just felt so unwelcome and rushed even though the place was dead. Aside from that, the food was pretty good. I really liked the concept of the entire thing. Fast, convenient and decent prices.

Barbici has become my favorite fast food restaurant in town. The price and value are at least comparable to Chipotle; I dare say they are actually superior because they offer something completely new: Chipotle-style food made of Italian ingredients. It's not authentic Italian, just like Chipotle is not authentic Mexican. So what? The food is great and that's all that matters. One guy foolishly compared Barbici to Taco Bell. Well, Taco Bell serves mistery meat while Barbici (among other things) has pancetta, fried capers, artichoke, steak, sauteed shrimp, and other ingredients prepared fresh one row behind the counter, just like Chipotle. The entire concept is a brand new creation, which is actually good because I'm not crazy about traditional Italian food. They invented this narrow oval flatbread and named it "Tavoleta" (they're in the process of trademarking it) and use it as the base of all their meals. They combine it with meats and what can best be described as "savory sprinkles" that add a wonderfully layered rich taste to the meal. They take great care to not overpower the dish by limiting the sprinkles to about a teaspoon each. I have never had anything like this before, so I salute the inspired chef who created it. As a side note they don't skimp on the bicycle theme. The bar stools made out of bicycle tire rims are an especially nice touch. The bathroom faucet is shaped like a handlebar, how cool is that? I don't normally give 5 stars to fast food places, but Barbici is such a well done reformulation of fast Italian food that I feel it deserves recognition. It's a local company to South Bend too (owned and created by the so-so Hacienda restaurant).

I love Barbici. You can get a good meal whether you are looking for a sandwich, salad or pasta. All of the ingredients are prepared well and I love the counter-style ordering where you can just pick what you want on your meal. I gave 4 stars because sometimes they skimp on servings and charge too much extra for add-one's. No way that roasted veggies should cost an extra $3. One thing that chipotle does so well is give heaping servings at a reasonable price. Would like to see Barbici drop their prices by about $1-$2 per meal. Overall I love this place though, it is a once a week stop for me!

BarBici is a new, fun, and unique Italian restaurant that serves quality food fast. And a great value as well! I wasn't familiar with "Italian Street Food" but once introduced I became a huge fan. For approximately the same price as a McDonald's value meal you can create a BarBici original that is enough food for two to share, or take home half in one of the sturdy ""to go" boxes for another meal. There are so many choices and ingredients to select from: salad or sandwich? Spaghettini or rotelle? If you aren't up to making decisions you can choose from one of the Chef's Selections on the menu. The vegetables are crispy and fresh and the pasta is always cooked just right. The bread (Tavoleta) is fresh, warm and tasty. I have tried all the sauces, vegetables, cheeses and most of the toppings in various combinations and all have been excellent. I was excited to see Greenbush beer on the menu too. The seating area and decor is fresh and different, the employees are friendly and helpful in explaining the ingredients that are unfamiliar and in making suggestions. I predict BarBici will be a huge hit in this new area.

I think Bar Bici is a great - and badly needed - addition to this new neighborhood. If you cannot decide where to go on Eddy Street, give it a try. It is much better than the "loud bars pretending to be restaurants." And it is far more unique than the usual fast food places on the street. What is especially wonderful is not having to wait for a waiter/waitress - so you get restaurant quality food in just seconds! I am extremely picky about freshness of vegetables, and my salad, with it's fresh artichoke hearts, arugula, olive tapenade, sun-dried tomatoes, and red peppers was as good as in most good NYC Italian places--and a much more generous portion. I can't fathom why reviewers would have anything negative to say, unless they were perhaps trying it when it was just opening. The seating area is attractive and NOT pretentious. If you are going to show at DeBartolo, don't suffer through the slow restaurant service elsewhere, or the line out the door at Chipotle - this would be ideal for pre-show dinner.

Wow talk about disappointing. The Good: staff was very nice (recognized some from chipotle) and the restaurant and overall branding was very nice. The Bad: food tasted just like cafeteria food. This place is essentially trying to apply Chipotles model to Italian food but fails miserably. Pre cooked pasta tastes like crap and all of the ingredients have pretentious names. I am no expert on Italian food but I did live in Florence for three months and never saw one dish that BarBici serves there.

Great. Flavorful. Quick. Different than anyplace else. Nice decor, good beverage selection. This is what fast casual should be.

First off, the food here was delicious! I am a big fan of spicy Italian sausage and their Polpette & Sausage Sandwich did not disappoint! The ordering style is very similar to other places where you have the choice of ordering a preassigned entree or a make-your-own. You are able to follow your entree down a line of fresh ingredients to which to include or exclude at your choice. Also, unlike other places, this place sells craft beer from the Greenbush Brewing Company! The place has a very inviting atmosphere with seating inside ranging from individual tables to an island bar or outside along the commercial plaza strip. Cyclist will especially appreciate the bicycling theme ranging from bicycle wall decorations to bar stools made completely out of wheel rims! This place will really hit the spot, whether you're looking to have a quick lunch, satisfying dinner, or are just coming in from a bicycle ride.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best places in town! And I don't write reviews, but seriously, my husband and I will drive 30 minutes just to eat here! It's quick, the ingredients are always fresh, the selection of toppings is huge including chicken, beef, seafood, grilled delicious vegetables, red, white, or pesto sauce, oh and all the cheeses! Don't even get me started on that..! Honestly, I don't even know how they keep the price so low, with the amount of high quality ingredients they serve. To me, the best part is that you create your own dish! So, you can get pasta and meatballs with lots of cheese on it, or make it nice and healthy with grilled vegetables and a salad on the side. It's an awesome place and I would highly recommend it!

I was in the area and I just wanted something different for lunch. I noticed this new Italian place, so I thought I would give it a try. My initial gut reaction was negative. I am HIGHLY ALLERGIC to pretention and the hairs on the back of my neck stood-up as I walked further in to this corporate-designed faux pas. There were about 10 employees behind the counter, all under 25, and they all seemed to be new or "in training". I really like a good meatball sandwich and I was surprised not to see it on the menu of a place that advertises itself as "Italian street food". I asked the 12 year-old kid working behind the counter what is the "POLPETTE & sausage" sandwich and he said "It's meatballs and sausage with blah, blah, blah..." So, right away this place thinks it's too cool to have a "Meat Ball Sub"...instead it has "POLPETTE & sausage"! I was severely unimpressed, but it seemed the lesser of the evils on the menu- I said "O.K., I'll have one". The 12 year old kid begins masterfully crafting this gastronomic-farce by describing every ingredient as he adds them, almost pronouncing the pseudo-exotic names correctly..."First I'll start with the Tavoleta...then I'll add the ricotta...now, we add the beef polpette....blah, blah, blah..."...-ad nauseam! I finally said "Just make the sandwich- I don't need the play by play"- it was truly irritating! I sat down, and this pale, flat, dead, little thing did not look appetizing at all. It was barely warm and not the flavor explosion promised by the menu and advertising. I actually did like the spicy sauce- but, it was not enough to carry the rest of the blasé ingredients. I went to restroom and the final symbol of neurotic pretention!, a Dyson hand sink with the dryer built into the water faucet. Dyson are the people who created the bladeless "air multiplier" (a table top fan) that had a $300.00 price tag. Always an answer to an un-needed question at a very high dollar amount, Dyson preys on insecure fools. I will never waste 20 minutes of my life in this place again. ******UPDATE 10-17-2014**************** I have noticed several VERY positive "reviews" that have suddenly popped-up for Bar Bici in the last week or so. Most of the "reviewers" have very few or even only one review (Bar Bici) in their profile. Several of these "reviews" read like cheesy ad copy- listing the fresh ingredients and touting the value of eating at Bar Bici. This leads me to believe these so-called "reviews" are probably written by the owners or their friends and relatives- they don't read like true reviews from real people.

The place is simply extraordinary. For a very small price you get high quality ingredients. And the most exciting part is that it is do-it-yourself style, "Chipotle style." So, you simply create your own masterpiece of flatbread, pasta, and incredible additions of cheeses, sauces, meats, seafood, roasted, pickled, and fresh vegetables. Exceedingly delicious.

Live close by so we thought we'd give it a try. Mediocre at best. Flat bread was doughy and food overpriced. Just a little better than Fazolis, but just a little. BTW I've heard this restaurant is run by Hacienda chain... another sad attempt at ethnic food.

Cool, unique styled food. Nice for a change from the places we all visit so frequently. Staff really seemed to enjoy working there. He decor and ambiance was spectacular! I highly recommend if you are tired of the chipotle/five guys scene.

Fast, good location, seriously delicious food, big portions (the regular size pasta is enough for two meals), and reasonable price. It's like the Italian version of chipotle.

It's Chipotle's business model, but with Taco Bell quality ingredients. While this is a bit of an overstatement, it does sum up my sentiments regarding this place: a great idea and something I really, really want to like, but the needed quality (and freshness) of ingredients simply isn't there. The staff members (16 or 17 folks working behind the counter, while an equal number or fewer of customers were in the restaurant) were very friendly, but not too knowledgeable regarding the menu or available options. Although the people behind the counter will almost certainly correct some of these early problems (BarBici opened in the last month), I don't hold out much hope for the food.

I like that it is something new and unique to the area. However, the food was good but nothing special. Pretty much an Italian version of Chipotle. It was crowded when I went, but the line went quickly. The bread was very good, but again this is an Italian fast food place and for that the food was average. Worth a try. I will go back.

I've been to Bar Bici several times and each time I have been thoroughly impressed. There are many gourmet ingredient options and the possibilities are endless to make your own pasta, salad, or sandwich. My favorite is the Rotelle pasta with chicken. I also loved the white and red sauce. The employees were very friendly and patient in answering questions I had about the menu. If you are looking for some low-end, dumpy Italian food go back to a fast-food chain restaurant; Bar Bici is the opposite. It is very high-end, exquisite dining with a big city feel. It may even be too high-end for some South Benders' palettes. It's similar to a restaurant I saw in Evanston, IL, which is the dining capital of Chicago. I really hope this place does well, as the food is absolutely delicious, the atmosphere is classy yet charming, and the environment is unique to anything South Bend has seen before. But again, if you're looking for unauthentic, cheap Italian food, this isn't the place.

Really cool concept. An Italian twist on the fast casual. I like! With the great variety of toppings and bases, it's fairly easy to have a completely different meal and flavor profile, even after numerous visits. Fresh, tasty ingredients and a fast meal join for a winning combination here.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
